Matteo Cairoli started the last round of the European Le Mans Series at the Portimão circuit, taking his fourth pole position of the season. Dempsey-Proton Racing’s driver set the quickest time of the LMGTe category lapping in 1:41.121, over one tenth of a second faster than the #88 twin car.
After having topped the free practice 2 with the time of 1:42.077, Cairoli improved further in the last qualifying of the year, to secure the best position for tomorrow’s race.
Sharing the duties with Christian Ried and Riccardo Pera, Porsche Young Professional driver aims to defend the vice champion position. Following a brilliant podium at Spa where he finished 2nd, and the 3rd place at the Le Castellet opener last April, Cairoli and his team-mates want to repeat the victory they took at the home track in Monza.
“Considering how we start the weekend, with a poor result in the Wednesday’s testing, I am very happy. Honestly I was not confident to take the pole position. I set the best time in my first flying lap, with the first set of fresh tires. We’ll try to do the best in the race to finish second in the Championship”, Cairoli said.
The 4-hour race will start tomorrow at 12.30 local time.
