The third round of the 2025 World Endurance Championship took place at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Matteo Cairoli took the helm of the #60 Mercedes-AMG LMGT3 of the Iron Lynx team. For this race, the Como native was joined by Stephen Grove and Brenton Grove, replacing the injured Claudio Schiavoni and Matteo Cressoni.
Qualifying was entrusted to Stephen Grove, as per the regulations, who finished 18th in his class with a time of 2:25.211. The team spent several minutes in the pits due to issues arising from the third free practice session, following an accident on Friday, which prevented them from recording a competitive time.
Stephen Grove also took the start, maintaining his position and avoiding trouble in the early stages of the 6 Hours of Spa. Matteo Cairoli took the wheel two hours into the race, facing a difficult comeback. The Como-born driver’s pace allowed him to recover into the points, climbing to ninth place. A few safety car periods helped Cairoli close the gap on the leading teams, but unfortunately, the team was hit with a 30-second Stop & Go penalty, which dropped them back to the back of the pack. Cairoli crossed the finish line in 12th place, just 6 seconds off the points, capping a positive and improving race.
Matteo Cairoli now looks to the next challenge in the FIA WEC, aiming to score his first points of the season in the next race, the most important on the calendar: the 24 Hours of Le Mans, scheduled for the weekend of June 14-15, 2025.
Matteo Cairoli
“It’s a shame we couldn’t finish in the points today, but we managed to maintain a pace that could have allowed us to finish in the top 10. Unfortunately, a collision penalized us and we lost time. However, we hope to gain more and more information on the car to maximize our results in the upcoming races, starting with Le Mans. I would therefore like to thank the entire Iron Lynx team and my teammates Stephen and Brenton for today’s race.”
