Matteo Cairoli continues positive ways claiming his first podium finish of the FIA WEC season, only one week after he has secured the 24H Nürburgring victory.
The Como-based racing driver alongside his team-mates Egidio Perfetti and Riccardo Pera, took the LMGTE Am second position in the Team Project 1 Porsche 911 RSR at the 8 Hours of Portimão. This let the Italian-Norwegian trio to re-open the campionship as they climbed up to P3, only 25 points shy of the front-runners. After having celebrated on Saturday afternoon the class pole position of the Bronze driver Perfetti, the Team Project 1 crew was not able to maintain the lead, nevertheless ending a good weekend.
"This is a great result for us", Cairoli commented. "Now we are again in contention for championship, despite we missed the first round at Spa. Today we deserved to win. We were the most competitive, although some mistakes prevented us to clinch the victory. However this year everything is going well. I'm very satisfied and optimistic."
The next FIA WEC round will take place in one month on 16/18 July at the home track in Monza.
