Matteo Cairoli ended 2021 FIA WEC season in Bahrain claiming two podium finishes in seven days and taking a P3 in the LMGTE Am class in the last round. In the past weekend 8-hour race the Italian driver doubled the result achived one week before at the same circuit of Sakhir in the 6 Hours of Bahrain, sharing successfully the Team Project 1 Porsche 911 RSR with Riccardo Pera and Egidio Perfetti.
This result let Cairoli and his teammates to move two positions up in the general standings to finish fourth in the championship. The trio of the German team secured a best second position of his class in the 8 Hours of Portimão last June, a fourth place in Monza and finished twice third in Bahrain.
Last Saturday a last lap move against Pera prevented him at the very last turn from finishing second. Furthermore a one-minute penalty for dangerous driving after the Pera himself inevitably went close to a marshall during a Full Course Yellow period, definitely cancelled every chance to claim a victory.
"I'm only 50 per cent satisfied. Our goal was to finish in the first three in the standings. Shame that we lost this opportunity at the last lap", Cairoli said. "However I'm happy to finish the season with a podium result, despite we could fight for the win. I made a good job, pushing very hard without making mistakes. Generally speaking, I'm happy about my driving this year. I hope to make better next season."
