Matteo Cairoli produced an absolutely sensational performance, claiming a podium finish at his first 24 Hours of Spa for team Dinamic Motorsport.
Overcoming a tough Super Pole session on Friday when he set the 15th quickest time, and two drive-through penalties, the Italian racing driver - who was joined in a Porsche 911 GT-R car by team-mates Christian Engelhart and Sven Müller - completed a super charge to take in the last minutes the third overall position. In bad weather conditions, Cairoli passed the Alessandro Pier Guidi’s Ferrari in the closing stages of the race making a spectacular maneuver at the Eau Rouge taking a deserved top-3 result.
“To come away with third is fantastic”, Cairoli said. “We had some unespected situations in the first part part of the race, having received a drive-through penalty due to a track limits. Another penalty for pit-stop infringement slowed us down further. The team did a fantastic job.”
Cairoli drove for nine hours and half, making a double stint during the night. Following a dominant victory at Nürburgring, Cairoli, Engelhart and Müller took the Endurance Cup lead with the same points of the AKKA ASP Mercedes crew.
