Matteo Cairoli made his return to the podium of the FIA WEC Championship in the penultimate round of the season. The Italian racing driver claimed the third place of the LMGTE Am class in the 6H Bahrain, after making well in the Team Project 1 Porsche 911 RSR shared with teammates Riccardo Pera and Egidio Perfetti.
The last time he hit a top-3 result it was last June in Portimão when he finished second, to take a fourth position in the next round held on his home track at Monza.
The Bahrain result reflected the third LMGTE Am quickest time set by Perfetti in the Friday's qualifying.
"We could aim to win", Cairoli commented. "We have been penalized by slow pit-stops. Considering our pace, we had enough margin to take a comfortable victory. I'm not fully satisfied".
In the LMGTE Am standings, Cairoli, Pera and Perfetti now lay on P6, having good chances to aim for a P3. The 8-hour race scheduled on the same Sakhir's track will decide.
